  3. How do I file for a Homestead and Food Sales Tax refund?
    The Reno County Clerk's Office will be happy to help you prepare the forms necessary to file for these tax refunds.  If you were a resident of Kansas for the entire year AND if you meet one of the following requirements you may be eligible for a Homestead or Food Sales Tax refund:

    --were permanently disabled or blind by Social Security for the entire year you are filing for;

    --had dependent children under age 18 living with you for the year you are filing for, you may qualify for this refund.

    Your total household income must be under $29,100 for a Homestead refund and under $29,700 for a Food Sales Tax refund.  Another requirement for a Homestead refund is that you lived in a home that was on the tax rolls for the entire filing year.  Your claim for a refund must be made by April 15 each year.

  7. How do I protest my property tax?
    In February or March you receive a validation notice on your real estate.  If you are unhappy with the value, fill out the appeal form on the back of the notice and turn it in to the Appraiser's Office by April 15th.  You will in turn have a hearing with the Appraiser's Office.  If you are not happy with the results of that hearing, fill out the back of your decision letter and turn it in to the Appraiser's Office within 18 days of the date on the letter.  You will then be scheduled for a hearing with the Hearing Officer Panel.  If you are unhappy with that hearing, you can appeal to the Kansas Board of Tax Appeals.  It is also possible to "pay under protest," or to appeal your property tax bill when you pay it in the Treasurer's Office.  That phase of the appeal process is not a function of the Clerk's Office.
